8 year-old Shanti is in grade 4. She is from an indigenous community, and lives with her uncle, aunt and cousins in a temporary shelter in a remote area, literally on the side of a steep hill in the shadow of the Himalayas. They are subsistence farmers and cultivate maize, corn, wheat, rice and other season produce. Shanti  lost her mother during the earthquake, who was alone in the house when it collapsed. Later that same year, her father died from bee stings sustained during a cliff honey harvest. In school, her favorite subject is math, and she finds English difficult. She loves to play in the fields and around the village with her friends.
