In 2017, Himalayan Children’s Charities (HCC) was alerted to the case of Monika, a young girl living in rural Nepal. When Monika was just a toddler, her parents abandoned her with her elderly grandmother, who passed away not long afterward, leaving Monika on her own.
Monika was living in a rural area of Nepal, devastated by the 2015 earthquakes, with high numbers of people living in ‘internally displaced persons’ camps. For more than a year, Monika wandered from one camp to another, and from village to village, asking people for food and shelter – she was just 4 years old.
When the local Nepali government finally learned of her case, they informed childrens charities working in the area, including Himalayan Children’s Charities. Not long after, Monika was enrolled HCC’s Rise Program.
For the past 6 years, Monika has been attending at a private, boarding school, and has been thriving. She is now in 4th grade, is very intelligent and studious, and always one of the top students in her class. Her favorite subjects are English, Science, and Math, but she is happy to learn anything new. In her free time, she loves to read, draw and play volleyball with her classmates. Monika has been interested in helping people since she was very little and her aim in life is to become a doctor.
